My story at LEONI

My name is Jonathan and I have been working for LEONI in Roth since September 2022. After the "Apprenticeships Evening" event, I visited LEONI in Roth at the end of April 2022 to learn more about the apprenticeships on offer. The apprenticeship to qualify as a technical product designer quickly sparked my interest, and my choice of training program was this fixed. Shortly thereafter, I applied for an internship lasting several weeks, which I already started in August 2022.  Thanks to my prior knowledge from having studied process engineering, I was assigned a comprehensive task from the outset and on which I worked successfully through to the end of my internship. Based on my performance, I was able to start my apprenticeship to qualify as a technical product designer for machinery and plant construction at the beginning of the new apprenticeship year.

This is my job

My apprenticeship began with the introductory weeks during which I was able to get to know the operation, many colleagues and LEONI’s values. Thereafter, my path led me to our Technical Training Center. There I participated in the basic course on metals and made a truck of metal with the help of various manufacturing techniques.

After successfully completing this course, I was transferred to the Process Engineering & Technology department where my actual workplace was based. There I took a drawing course so I could thereafter start designing basic commissions. These commissions became increasingly complex over time and as my capabilities progressed. In between gaps of several weeks, I participated in training sessions and seminars during which various instructors thoroughly and adeptly conveyed to me such subjects as mechanical joining, pneumatics, electrical engineering as well as turning and milling.

What I particularly appreciate about my job is the variety of activities, which are different every day. Yet what excited me most was the opportunity to delve into new areas of responsibility where a certain degree of creative freedom is always upheld.

My daily routine

Start of the day

After a nourishing breakfast, I set off to LEONI by car. During the journey, I can go through the day ahead in my mind and at the same time enjoy the peacefulness of the morning. I get to my place of work shortly after 7 a.m.

Morning

To start the day, I go through my emails and check whether there are any meetings scheduled for the day. If meetings are on the agenda, they often involve discussing tasks for the day. Thereafter I’ll devote myself to my own current tasks, which usually involve working on various drawings such as the design of a new injection molding tool or a production-related device. Sometimes I receive parcels in the morning containing tools that are due to be tested during the day.

Lunch break

After a productive morning, I’ll take a lunch break at 12 noon and get myself something to eat in the canteen together with colleagues.

Afternoon

After lunch, I return to my drawing project or might go to the production shop to take measurements there for my current jobs. If a job requires some research, I’ll take care of that, too.

My highlight

During the introductory week of my first apprenticeship year, all new apprentices visited the factory museum in the center of Roth, which is devoted to our company's origin. There we discovered exciting aspects of what was known as the ‘Lyonese’ industry, which gave the name to our company as it is today. I found this day especially fascinating because it illustrated how deep-rooted our company’s tradition is, and how impressively it grew and changed over the course of time.

My view of LEONI as an employer

The LEONI company’s growth into a major, regional employer always fascinated me and its apprenticeships are doubtless among the best. I very much appreciate that my work is recognized and the confidence that is placed in me every day.

Friendliness and open communication characterize the work culture at LEONI. When delving into new areas of responsibility, I quickly learn from communicative colleagues who will provide support in solving subject-specific problems. The people in my department work in a highly motivated manner, and their refreshing humor is an aspect that I particularly enjoy.

In three words, I would describe LEONI as appreciative, open, and progressive.
