My story at LEONI

My name is Sara, and I started my dual-study program at LEONI in Roth in 2012. Thanks to cooperation between LEONI and Nuremberg Tech, I was able to complete both my apprenticeship to qualify as an industrial mechanic and my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering within four and half years. During this time, I obtained multifaceted insights into various departments. At first, I was assigned to departments that were particularly relevant to my apprenticeship to qualify as an industrial mechanic.

This enabled me to gain both theoretical and practical experience in various production processes including turning, milling, and welding, for example. Later during my degree course, I opted to focus on design and development, and I wrote my bachelor's dissertation in the Process Engineering department. Having successfully completed this, I was recruited directly and started with a permanent position as project engineer.

After five years acquiring career experience in technical project management as well as during numerous domestic and international business trips, I decided to go for a fresh challenge. I transferred into production and took on responsibility for a manufacturing area. In addition, I was given responsibility for production projects. I simultaneously began my master's degree program in industrial engineering and management. Thanks to flexible working hours, I was able to finish my degree program alongside my job and completed it in 2023 with my master's dissertation on the subject of ‘Analysis of potential of detail planning within production’.

This is my job

As production coordinator, I am by and large responsible for production running smoothly. In that capacity, I oversee a department that is responsible for manufacturing high-temperature cables. I bear responsibility for production quality; I am the point of contact for any questions from machine operators and I run various cross-departmental projects to optimize processes.

Working in a solution-focused way is an absolute must in my position. Every day presents new challenges for which creative, quick, and effective solutions must be found. I furthermore work closely together with many colleagues from other departments. This variety as well as the opportunity to have a direct influence on our products means that my job is never boring.

Daily routine

Morning

My day starts we me getting an overview of the previous shifts’ issues. These are discussed in stand-up meetings at various levels with the respective colleagues. I spend the rest of the morning on day-to-day business, meaning that I work on emails, shift and order planning as well as the latest problems and issues of the day during the preceding late and night shifts.

Lunch

Preferably, I spend my lunch break by taking a walk together with my colleagues or joining them for lunch in the company restaurant called ‘Stiebers’.

Afternoon

Toward the afternoon things normally settle down a bit, and most of the acute issues will have been discussed and settled. This leaves me time for projects and more time-consuming tasks that require some more peace and concentration.

Evening

During my 30-minute drive home, I go through the past working day once more and conclude it in my mind. I use my evenings to exercise or to meet with friends.

My highlight

One of my highlights at LEONI was my first trip to China. My job involved commissioning new plant, during which it was especially exciting to get to know the new culture, the new processes, and the work locally. Thanks to the hospitality of my Chinese colleagues, I had the opportunity to share thoughts and information on both ongoing projects and private matters during dinners together.

Another highlight was having participated in the ‘Women in Leadership Positions’ seminar, which my boss at the time had made possible. In dialog with participants from other companies, I learned a lot about the problems and challenges in comparable companies. It was helpful to be able to share thoughts and ideas with other people. As the seminar spanned a period of two years, it was interesting for me to see how we all progressed. The outstanding care within our company with regular feedback meetings rounds the whole picture off.

My view of LEONI as an employer

The LEONI company is known for its high-quality training, from which I benefited myself. Alongside generous pay, I was given the opportunity to take on exciting and interesting tasks from the outset. LEONI furthermore enabled me to enhance my qualifications. For instance, flexible working hours gave me the scope to take time for a master's program without having to give up my job.

In addition to the beneficial, collectively agreed conditions like 30 days annual leave and a 35-hour week, the interpersonal relationships are of particularly great importance to me. Thanks to working in multidisciplinary teams, I got to know many experienced and lovely people. I thereby learned a lot from my colleagues and made new friends.
