My story at LEONI

My name is Taskin, and I have been working for LEONI in Roth since September 2004. I began my career with an apprenticeship to qualify as a junior cable worker, which is these days known as machine and plant operator. During my apprenticeship, I acquired comprehensive knowledge in both the practical and theoretical application of all process steps in cable production. This covers the entire operation from processing the raw material through to completing the final cable.

Having completed my apprenticeship, I was offered a full-time job on an extrusion line, which is where I am still working 17 years later.

This is my job

The duties of an extrusion line operator are multifaceted and varied. They include setting the plant up as specified by the customer order, continual monitoring of the ongoing production process as well as performing quality checks on the manufactured goods.

It motivates me to operate large plant and move tons of material in the process. I particularly appreciate the opportunity to incorporate my technical understanding in the practical application of my job. My job becomes even more varied and interesting thanks to helping out on other machines.

My daily routine

Morning

At the beginning of my shift, I relieve the previous one. This involves describing events that occurred in the previous shift, discussing peculiarities of the current product, and sharing relevant information. Finally, we have a quick chat over a coffee.

Thereafter it’s off to work and my first step is to get an overview of the shift ahead:

  • Which cable are we making today?
  • Which primary materials and tools do I need?
  • Is sufficient primary material available?
  • Which product will be made next?
  • Which testing and packaging stipulations must I observe with respect to the current order?

These are all important questions that have a direct impact on the way my day goes. While the line produces the customer order, I prepare the machine environment. As soon as all preparations for the next order are made, I reward myself with a coffee from the coffee vending machine. These machines are provided in every break room and offer space for a brief rest together with my colleagues.

Thereafter I return to the line, check the running process as well as the finished products to get them packed.

Lunch break

We do not have any set break times as they depend on the line’s order planning. However, I appreciate sharing experiences with colleagues while having lunch in the break room or during coffee breaks. Apart from the option of having lunch in our canteen, we have the permanently filled snack machines available to us in the break rooms, meaning that supply is assured even during late and night shifts. The assortment ranges for chocolates to freshly made sandwiches and reheatable dishes.

Afternoon

Just before finishing work, the timing of which depends on the shift, I clean my workplace for the next shift.  I also try to prepare everything possible for the next shift and then wait to be relieved.

My highlights

To be more specific, I’ve had two highlights so far, which are quite similar: on two occasions I was given the opportunity to actively participate in commissioning completely new extrusion lines. This is always done in large project teams comprising process engineers, product technicians, process technicians, machine operators, craftspeople etc., with each participant contributing their chunk of know-how. This interaction of people from various departments ended in successful commissioning.

Apart from the technical aspects that you learn in such projects, this work with colleagues from other departments is a lot of fun. The jointly achieved objective strengthens the bond between colleagues and provides something positive to talk about even years later.

That is what makes LEONI a good employer

LEONI is an employer bound by collective bargaining and I find the collaboration with IG Metall as a labor union to be a big plus point. Alongside the attractive pay and the related benefits like vacation and Christmas pay, leisure time does not come up too short either. Overtime is compensated for in the form of leisure time, which means more free days in a year that I most like to spend with my loved ones.

Working life brings new challenges every day that can, however, be resolved together in the team. Solidarity and mutual helpfulness have top priority here. Furthermore, the fun element does not come up short either, and it is thanks to this that some colleagues have become true friends.

Would I start once more at LEONI if I could turn the clock back? The answer is emphatic: YES.
